Is it possible to get a reprint of a work check from over a year ago if you never cashed the check?

I worked for a company up until last september and when i attempted to deposit my check into an atm the machine ate my check and the bank couldn't retreive the check. They gave me the money upfront but when i tried to get another copy of the check from old employer they never sent me a copy and they have been avoiding me for all this time. I can't go to the office because it is in another state. is there anything i can do to force them to give me the check? i did work this money and now i am in debt to the bank and it is affecting my finances.
