Drvingin Puerto Rico?

I am going to PR for the first time and staying at the Marriott in San Juan. Was thinking of renting a car for the week. I am well traveled throughout the Carribbean. Do you thinks its a good ideal to have a rental car here ? How are the roads and will I have issues with the Spanish sign ? I have rented in St. Martin where its French and Dutch and got by ok.
