Why does Saturn Vue stall out when putting gas in it? Revs low then dies.?

Most vehicles today are built with a closed fuel system. If you vent the fuel tank while the vehicle is running, it could cause a variety of problems depending on the make of the vehicle. I had a Tacoma and the check engine light would come on. I found out that if I shut of the engine and opened the gas cap, pressue would escapse from the fuel tank. Then I could start it, and the light would go out. I suppose the excess pressure would cause the light to come on. I spoke to other people with Toyotas who had similar experiences.
